SCOTTISH SENIOR WOMEN

SCOTTISH SENIOR WOMEN STRUGGLE TO
MASTER THE MACHRIHANISH MONSTER

The Machrihanish links, even off the par-72 women’s tees, proved a bit of a monster for the over-50s in the first round of the Scottish senior women’s amateur stroke-play championship today.
Only four players broke 80 with Ladybank’s Lorna Bennett leading the field with a 77.
One behind were the defending champion Pamela Williamson (Baberton) and Fiona De Vries. Moira Thomson (North Berwick) was two off the pace with an 80.
Scotland senior international Noreen Fenton (Merchants of Edinburgh) strained her back taking her caddie car out of her car boot – and she struggled round in 88.
There were some high scores at individual holes but, paradoxically, there was a very low score at the 159yd 16th – a hole in one by Rita Dee (Kingsknowe) with her driver. Rita finished on 82.
The stroke-play championship is over 36 holes at the end of which the 16 leading players will go forward to contest the match-play championship in what is now a four-day programme.
