MHAIRI WINS ABERDEENSHIRE GIRLS TITLE
Mhairi Johnstone (Northern) produced four birdies in winning the Aberdeenshire girls'championship at wet and mist-shrouded Portlethen Golf Club today.
Mhairi, a 16-year-old five-handicapper, beat Lauren Whyte (Aberdeen Ladies) by 5 and 4 in the final with birdies at the second, eighth, ninth and 11th. She won four holes in a row from the eighth, three of the with birdies to surge from one up to five up.
Lauren won the fourth and the 12th. It was the second year in a row she had lost in the final.
In the morning semi-finals, Mhairi looked on her way out of the championship when she was three down with four to play against Nikita Lamond. But Miss Johnstone won through at the 19th after birdieing the 18th to square the match.
In the handicap championship final, Strathclyde University student Hayley Thomson (Newmachar), playing off 13, beat Fiona Fullerton (Huntly), handicap 16, by 2 and 1 after being three up at one stage but being pulled back to only one hole of a lead.
