MOIRA LEADING SCOT AT END OF
FIRST DAY AT DUMFRIES & CO
Former Scottish girls champion Moira Thomson (North Berwick) was the best placed Scot in joint fifth place at the end of the first round of the Senior British women’s open amateur golf championship at Dumfries & County Golf Club today.
Moira sandwiched a double bogey at the 15th and a bogey at the 16th between birdies at the 14th and 18th in her round five-over-par 77 (40-37) to be six shots behind leader Christine Quinn from Hockley Golf Club, Hampshire.
Christine reached the turn in 32 and had six birdies in all – but she needed them to counter-balance a triple bogey 7 at the 11th and single shots dropped at the first and 16th.
Next best Scot after Mrs Thomson were St Andrews hotelier Fiona De Vries (St Rule), recent winner of the Scottish senior women’s match-play championship, and former Scottish champion Fiona Anderson from Blairgowrie, now based in Lancashire and a member of Formby Ladies. Fiona had a 79 (41-38 which included double bogeys at the fifth and 16 and birdies at the 10th and 12th.
Pamela Williamson (Baberton), who was expected to be among the leading Scottish challengers, saddled herself with an 87. After an opening birdie, she ran up a triple bogey 7 at the second and then had a string of bogeys, only rarely broken by pars in halves of 43 and 44.
Former Curtis Cup player Vicki Thomas (Carmarthen), one of the pre-tournament favourites, had an 80.
