PLATFORM 2 GIRLS

MONIFIETH GIRL WINS PLATFORM 2
GIRLS EVENT AT NEWMACHAR

Monifieth’s Ashley Smith became the first Angus-based winner of the Platform 2 girls’ golf tournament with a round of three-over-par 75 over the Newmachar Swailend course today.
Ashley, 16 years old and a nine-handicapper, won by four strokes from Lauren Whyte (Aberdeen Ladies) with Sammy Vass (Tain) and Jacqueline Sneddon (Alyth) joint third on 83.
“I had never seen the course before today but I hit most of the fairways with my drives and I pitched and putted well,” said Miss Smith who is the Monifieth girls’ champion.
After an outward half of one-under-par 35 with birdies at the third and seventh and a bogey at the sixth, Ashley was heading for a runaway win over the field of 30 girls drawn from as far north as Tain until she ran up a triple bogey 7 at the 15th and a bogey at the 18th .
Ashley Smith also had the lowest net score of 66 but could not win two prizes and so the leading handicap award went to Rachel Polson (Petercutler). She had a net 67 off 24. She won by three shots from Sammy Vass’s younger sister Julie who had a net 70 off 16. Julie has cut her handicap from 31 to 16 this season.
