ENGLAND SENIORS BEAT SCOTLAND

ENGLAND BEAT SCOTS IN SENIOR
WOMEN’S SERIES AT HAMILTON

England continued their domination of the senior women’s home internationals with a 5-2 win over Scotland on the second day of the series at Hamilton Golf Club today.
Wales, spearheaded by former Curtis Cup player Vicki Thomas, walloped Ireland 6-1 and only they can stop the English winning the over-50s title for the fourth year in row since its inauguration in 2003.
Scotland’s hopes virtually sank in the morning foursomes which they lost 2-0. But they did make a very good fight of it in the singles, winning two to England’s three. In fact, at the turn Scots led in four of the five ties, only British seniors champion Chris Quinn being ahead in her tie against Pamela Williamson, which she went on to win 3 and 2.
Christine Watson (a 3 and 1 winner over Lorna Bennett) and Carole Caldwell (winner by two holes against Noreen Fenton) turned their matches around with a fine display of finishing. England team manager Cathy Bowerbank said:
"Christine Watson was two down after 11 and won the next three holes to get to one up. She held on to that until the 16th where she hit two fantastic shots into the green to go two up. That gave us the four points we needed to win.
"Carole had a fantastic game. She was one down after 15 and then won 16, 17 and 18 to finish two up. It was a wonderful finish."
England head the table with two wins, ahead Scotland and Wales one win apiece, and Ireland two defeats.
