NORTH-EAST BOYS' GOLF

TOM SPENCER WINS SPENCE
TROPHY AT KINGS LINKS

Banchory boy Tom Spencer won the Spence Trophy at Kings Links today (Sunday) when he beat Ryan Penny (Portlethen) by 3 and 1 in the final.
In a battle between two talented 15-year-olds – Tom plays off one and Ryan off two – in very wet conditions, the golf was of a surprisingly high standard.
Inchmarlo Golf Centre junior member Spencer had an eagle 2 – he pitched in from 60yd at the 17th – and four birdies while Penny was level par apart from the eighth where he lost a ball off the tee.
Four down after 12 holes following birdies by Spencer at the 11th and 12th, Penny hit back with birdies at the 14th and 16th. Then Spencer clinched the title contested by Aberdeen & District junior club champions with his eagle at the 17th.
Tom has recently been promoted from the Under-16s to the Under-18 Elite Squad by the Scottish Golf Union ... good going for a 15-year-old.
It was the second year in a row that Penny had lost in the Spence Trophy final.
In the semi-finals Spencer beat Shaun Stevens (Deeside) by 4 and 2 while Penny beat Donald Macandrew (Hazlehead) by 2 and 1.
