SWI DAY 0NE AT HAMILTON

SCOTLAND v ENGLAND COULD BE SECOND-DAY TITLE DECIDER AT HAMILTON

If Scotland are to break England’s three-year grip on the senior women’s home internationals golf title, then they must beat the Auld Enemy at Hamilton on Wednesday on the second day of the three-day programme.
Scotland opened their account with a 4 ½-2 ½ win over Wales while England crushed Ireland 5-0 in the singles to complete a comprehensive 6-1 victory. Picture of Scotland team and officials at Hamilton by kind permission of TOM WARD, the Ladies Golf Union official photographer.
On Wednesday, it’s Scotland v England in what is a virtual title decider.
Former Curtis Cup player Vicki Thomas won the first singles for Wales by beating Pamela Williamson (Baberton) 2 and 1 in a tight match which was decided by Vicki’s capture of the 12th and 15th holes.
That was the only singles tie that Scotland lost.
St Andrews hotelier Fiona de Vries (St Rule), showing the skills that won her the Scottish senior women’s match-play title at Machrihanish recently, beat Janet Doleman 4 and 3 after being four up on the ninth tee.
Lorna Bennett (Ladybank) won by 3 and 2 over Ann Lewis after winning the ninth, 12th and 14th for a three-hole lead.
Helen Faulds (Douglas Park) was held to a square game by Helen Joyce or perhaps it was the other way around. The Welsh player won the 17th to go one up and Helen, who had been two up at the turn, had to win the 18th to get half a point.
Noreen Fenton (Merchants of Edinburgh) won by 2 and 1 over Denise Richards with a strong finish which saw her win the 15th to square the contest, then the 16th and 17th for victory.
