ULSTER FRESHMAN WINS IN USA

FRESHMAN FERGAL WINS HIS FIRST
EVENT ON US COLLEGE CIRCUIT

Fergal Rafferty, a Sam Houston State University freshman student from Carrickmore, Omagh in Northern Ireland, won the rain-shortened Battle on the Bend men’s college golf tournament at Cypress Bend Resort, Many in Louisiana.
Rain washed out one of the scheduled three rounds, leaving Fergal the winner with scores of 73 and 69 for a two-under-par total of 142. He won by two shots from Jeremey Jeansonne (McNeese State University) who scored 71 and 73 for 144 over the 6,707yd, par-72 course.
Christoper Carson from Dunoon, a third-year student at Sam Houston State, finished joint 35th on 153 with rounds of 79 and 74.
Rafferty’s excellent showing after only a handful of tournaments helped Sam Houston State (585) win the team event by two shots from Texas-San Antonia in a 10-college contest.

GIRLS IN HATTER FALL CLASSIC

Bethune-Cookman College sophomore students Fern Grimshaw, from Dorset, and Becky Dowell, from Thornecombe, finished joint 12th and 16th respectively in the Hatter Fall Classic women’s college tournament at Victoria Hills Golf Club at DeLand, Florida.
Fern had scores of 77, 82 and 78 for a total of 237 over the 6,000yd par-72 course.
Becky’s rounds were 82, 83 and 73 for 238.
A third English player in the field, Victoria Harris (Daytona Beach Community College) came 19th on 243 with scores of 81, 82 and 80.
Praewnapa Phol-Uaypron, a Florida Atlantic sophomore student from Bangkok, won with 77, 74 and 72 for a total of 223.
Daytona Beach Community College (930) won the team event by two shots from Florida Atlantic. Bethune-Cookman College (989) finished sixth of the eight colleges participating.
