ENGLISH-BORN HEAD GOLF
COACH IS QUITTING POST
AT SAMFORD, ALABAMA
Ian Thompson from Dorset, possibly the only English-born head golf coach at an American university, is to resign at the end of the spring term.
Thompson is in his seventh season as head women's golf coach at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. He also helps in the organisation of the college's men's golf team.
"The timing is right for me to stand down. I feel like I will be leaving Samford women's golf at the best it has ever been," said Ian (pictured right).

"It's still a tough decision to make. I have enjoyed every minute of my association with Samford, which dates back to my first day on campus as a freshman in 1989."
DEGREE IN JOURNALISM
DEGREE IN JOURNALISM
Ian graduated in 1993 at Samford University with a degree in journalism and mass communication. He will resign his position to pursue other opportunities in the Birmingham, Alabama area, including continuing to write about local golf for "GolfSouth Magazine" and the "Birmingham News."
Samford's director of athletics Bob Roller said they would be sorry to see Thompson go.
"Ian is a great ambassador for Samford and our golf programmme. It is our hope that we can keep him involved with our athletics department and utilise his experience as a Samford alum and his status within the local golf community.," said Mr Roller.
Thompson grew up in Wimborne, Dorset and moved to Alabama on a golf scholarship at the age of 20. He has called Birmingham home ever since. Ian played on the Samford men's golf team from 1989-93, finishing sixth in the 1990 conference championship being one of his best individual performances.
