DANIELLE McVEIGH BATTLES ON
TO GET TOP 20 PLACE IN
TEXAS A&M EVENT
Danielle McVeigh, the Irish girls’ champion of 2005 and now a student at Texas A&M University, battled on through quadruple, triple and double bogeys to make the top 20 in the prestigious Texas A&M Memorial women’s college tournament at Traditions Golf Club, Bryan in Texas.
Danielle, pictured above, finished joint 19th in a field of 81 good players with rounds of 80, 76 and 75. Over the three rounds she had a quadruple bogey 8 at the par first hole on Day 1; a triple bogey 6 at the short 11th and a double bogey 5 at the short 16th in Day 2, and in her final round, that short 16th sank its teeth into her again, costing her a double bogey 5.
But Miss McVeigh did birdie the 12th to help her “escape” with a 75 over the 6,272yd, par-72 course.
Paola Moreno (Southern California) won the individual title with 74, 70 and 72 for level par 216 – two shots ahead of former British girls champion Anna Nordqvist (Arizona State) from Sweden with 73, 73 and 72.
Another past British girls title-winner, Azahara Munoz (Arizona State) from Spain tied for fifth place on 225 with 76, 75 and 74.
Pernilla Lindberg (Oklahoma State) from Sweden was fifth with 72, 77 and 78 for 227.
Belen Mozo (Southern California), the Spanish youngster who won both the British girls and women’s titles in Northern Ireland last year, tied for 12th place on 229 with rounds of 76, 75 and 78.
Arizona State (893) won the team title from Southern California (904) with UCLA and Oklahoma State sharing third place on 917. Texas A&M (926) finished sixth in the field of 16 colleges competing.
