ALVA YOUNGSTERS DOMINATE AT DOLLAR

By HUGH HUNTER

Five Alva youngsters reached the semi-final stages in the three events over a windy and showery Dollar course on Monday evening, emphasising the strength of junior golf at the smallest club in Clackmannanshire
In the senior boys’ event, it was Gary Elliot who scraped through at the 18th against Andrew Borek. In the junior event, county junior champion Lawrence Allan held a lead of two holes at the turn, and upped his game to close out John Salmond on the 14th green with some skilful golf.
Daniel Ashe had a much easier passage with a 6 and 5 win after being five up at the turn against Grant Ross. Finally, in the handicap section, Martin Hall and Neil Forbes also had fairly easy wins.
County boys champion Grant Dowie stayed on course for a double when he defeated Andre Scotland on the 17th with a birdie. Comeback of the evening just had to belong to 10-year-old Brian McAdam with a last-hole win against R Hunter of Alva after being three down at the turn. His win no doubt made up for big brother Bruce’s loss at the 19th.
The event now moves to Tillicoultry for the semi-finals on Wednesday with the finals at Tulliallan on Thursday.
