BYRNE WINS FOR FIRST TIME ON LAST
APPEARANCE ON SGU JUNIOR TOUR
United States-bound James Byrne (Banchory) won his last competition on the Scottish Golf Union Junior Tour over the Newmachar Hawkshill course today.
Byrne, 18, had very good rounds of 68 and 71 for a five-under-par total of 139. He won by four strokes from Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) 68-65 and Michael Main (Thornton) 76-67.
Highlight of Byrne’s first round was a purple patch of five birdies in seven holes from the 10th
“It feels good to have finally managed to win on the Junior Tour on what will be my last event on it,” said Byrne who starts a four-year golf scholarship at Arizona State University in August.
“That’s the best I’ve ever hit it and if I had putted a bit better I could have scored a lot lower than 139.”
Byrne is a member of the Scotland side to play in Japan in July in the World boys’ team championship and there is an SGU Junior Tour event scheduled at that time.
