TRICIA MANGAN LOSES GRIP ON IRISH WOMEN'S
CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY AT LAHINCH
Defending champion Tricia (Mangan) McDonnell’s hopes of securing a third successive Lancôme Irish Ladies’ Close Championship ended at Lahinch Golf Club today when she was beaten at the 19th by Irish international Sinead O’Sullivan (Galway) in a morning second-round tie..
McDonnell lost the 15th and a one-hole lead when she failed to get up and down from off the green. An expensive three putts saw the 16th halved before Tricia lost the 17th after missing the green left.
A solid par on 18 saw the tie go to extra time where Sinead slotted a downhill 8ft birdie putt to advance to the last eight.
O'Sullivan was herself knocked out of the championship in the afternoon quarter-finals. She was beaten 6 and 5 by Marian Riordan (Tipperary). Marian was in devastating form on the outward half, and had a three-hole lead at the turn.
Lisa Maguire (Slieve Russell) continued to impress the sizeable galleries as she despatched both Catherine Tucker (Limerick) and Sinea Keane (The Curragh). Fairway-splitting tee shots and tidy iron play saw the talented 12-year-old cope with everything her opponents could muster. She now faces a semi-final against Marian Riordan.
Karen Delaney (Carlow) showed exceptional short game skills when she saw off the 2004 champion, Deirdre Smith (Co Louth) by 4 and 3. Karen now plays Maura Morrin (The Curragh) who beat her younger sister and fellow student at Kent State University, Ohio - Tara Delaney by one hole in the quarter-finals.
