Irish Ladies Golf Union Press Release
KAREN DELANEY IS NEW IRISH WOMEN'S CHAMPION
Karen Delaney (Carlow) was crowned Irish Lancôme Irish Ladies’ Close Champion for the first time at Lahinch Golf Club today. She beat Marian Riordan (Tipperary) by 3 and 2 in the 18-hole final.
Delaney, pictured right, was two up after only three holes but Riordan won the fourth to close the gap that was doubled when Delaney birdied the ninth to turn two up.
Riordan replied immediately with a fine birdie 3 at the 10th but the two-hole gap was restored when Riordan found sand on the long 14th. Delaney closed out the match on the 16th with an up and down from the sand.
Earlier in the day, 12-year-old Lisa Maguire, who had punched well above her weight all week, started brightly in her semi-final and led by a single hole through to the ninth against Marian Riordan.
Riordan’s solid driving and accurate iron play overpowered her young opponent and her one-hole lead into the 18th helped her close out the match when her 30 foot putt died at the cup.
Delaney had struck the ball magnificently in her semi final match with Maura Morrin (The Curragh) and turned one up through the ninth.
Morrin eagled the 15th to level the match but missed from 6 feet at the next to let Delaney escape off her bunkered tee shot.
The 17th was halved in par and a fine up and down from the greenside bunker on 18 saw Delaney through after Morrin three putted from the front edge.
Karen Delaney, who was Irish girls champion in 2002 and 2003 and has been a student at Kent State University, Ohio, alongwith her younger sister Tara, will surely have impressed the selectors sufficiently to regain her international status and lead the Irish team at the European team championships in Italy from July 10 to 14..
