KELLY BEATS EMMA IN EAST LOTHIAN
WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

Former Scottish girls’ match-play champion Kelly Brotherton (Craigielaw) added the East Lothian women’s county title to her collection at North Berwick Golf Club today.
The 21-year-old, pictured right, a student at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, first beat another past Scottish girls title-winner, Mrs Moira Thomson (North Berwick) by one hole in the semi-final before beating Emma Fairnie (Dunbar) by 3 and 1 in the final.
It was the second year in a row that 19-year-old Emma had suffered defeat at the last stage of the tournament.
She had beaten the leading qualifier and former Scottish champion Mrs Jayne Smith (Gullane Ladies) by 4 and 3 in the morning semi-finals.
In a contest between two long-hitting players, Emma had the edge over the opening holes in the final and was one up on Kelly after seven holes. But Miss Brotherton, a former Tulliallan Golf Club member, had got into her stride by the turn and was two holes to the good after 13 holes.
Emma got a bad lie at the 14th but lost it anyway to a birdie to go three down.
Miss Fairnie kept her hopes alive by winning the 16th but Kelly clinched her victory with a birdie 4 at the 17th.
The Handicap Quaich final was won by Ros Thoresen (North Berwick) who beat Lynda Jeffrey (Dunbar) by 3 and 2.
Today's results:
Semi-finals – E Fairnie (Dunbar) bt J Smith (Gullane Ladies) 4 and 3, K Brotherton (Craigielaw) bt M Thomson (North Berwick) 1 hole.
Final – Brotherton bt Fairnie 3 and 1.
HANDICAP QUAICH
Final – R Thoresen (North Berwick) bt L Jeffrey (Dunbar) 3 and 2.
