SCOTTISH SENIORS AMATEUR CIRCUIT
The new Scottish men's open amateur circuit this summer is not just for the elite over-55 golfers - anyone with a handicap of 12 or under will be able to enter the events at Stirling (June 28-29), Nairn Dunbar (July 19-20), Hamilton (July 26-27) and Monifieth (August 2-3).
Former Scottish seniors champion Gordon MacDonald (Callander), pictured right, winner of the Spanish Open seniors title for the past two years, is one of the leading lights in the SGU-backed drive to launch a mini-seniors tour.
"We are disappointed in the number of entries so far. Anything new takes time to establish itself but there are very few entries from players other than the ones you would expect from the low-handicap international team contenders," said Gordon.
"I want to stress that there are seven scratch prizes and seven HANDICAP prizes at each of the four two-round stroke tournaments. The maximum handicap is 12.4 and I want to squash the idea that this circuit is only for the top-notchers with low handicaps.
"We've got three age groups - 55 to 59, 60 to 64 and over 65, so there is something for everybody at these tournaments. We also want to encourage those who are over-50, and technically not senior golfers till they have their 55th birthdays, to come along and join us."
There will be an Order of Merit point scheme linking all four events and the top 30 players will compete in a special one-round tournament over Blairgowrie Lansdowne on August 30.
