SALLY WATSON FINISHES JOINT 11th
AT SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA
Sally Watson from South Queensferry finished joint 11th in a field of 36 top juniors for the girls’ section of the Thunderbird Junior International tournament over 54 holes on the Grayhawk Golf Club’s Raptor course at Scottsdale, Arizona.
Sally, 15, a student at David Leadbetter Golf Academy, Bradenton in Florida, had rounds of 75, 73 and 72 for a five-over-par total of 221.
She finished 15 shots behind the runaway winner, Kimberly Kim, the Hawaiian who won the US women’s amateur title as a 14-year-old last summer. Kim had rounds of 67, 72 and 67 for a 10-ujnder-par total of 206. She won by eight shots from American runner-up Vicky Hunt.
Miss Watson had birdies at the sixth, eighth, 11th and 16th in her final round which also included bogeys at the ninth, 10th, 12th and 15.
Former tennis ace Ivan Lendl’s golf-playing daughters Marika and Isabelle finished on 223 and 227 respectively.
The boys’ event, also over three rounds, was won by Arnond Vongvanij from Bradenton, Florida. He scored 66, 67 and 75 for eight-under-par 208 and won by two shots.
Matthew Haines (Rochester & Cobham) was the highest-placed English finishers. He came joint 17th on220.
Jack Hiluta finished joint 24th on 222, British boys champion Matthew Nixon (Ashton under Lyne) 28th equal of 224 while Darren Wright (Rowlands Castle) totalled 237 in joint 38th position.
