Ladies British open amateur championship

LOUISE KENNEY STILL THE LEADING SCOT
DESPITE A 77 IN SECOND Q ROUND

Pitreavie’s Louise Kenney slipped from an opening par 72 to a five-over 77 in the second qualifying round of the Ladies British open amateur championship at Alwoodley Golf Club, Leeds.
But she was still the leading Scot back in the clubhouse – and glad to be so with the rain soaking the second half of the field.
Louise once again made a good start. In the first round, she got an eagle 2 at the first. Today she birdied the second and third but three bogeys over the closing holes of the outward half, saw her turn in one-over 38.
Then a triple-bogey 7 at the 10th followed by a bogey at the 13th put another par round out of reach although she had a mixed bag of birdies and bogeys over the last few holes.
Louise birdied the short 14th and the long 16th but dropped shots at the 13th, 17th and 18.
Robert Gordon University student Laura Murray from Alford had a double-bogey 6 sandwiched between birdies at the first and third in a level-par 37 to the turn. She went on to score a creditable two-over 74 for 150 and a certain place in the match-play stages at the first attempt.
MICHELE'S BAD START
Aberdeenshire county champion Michele Thomson (McDonald Ellon) and Florida-based South Queensferry youngster Sally Watson were both 151.
“I started badly with a bogey at both the opening holes but settled down after that and birdied the eighth to get out in one-over-par 38,” said Michele.
She had a mixed bag over the last four holes with a bogey at the 15th, a birdie at the long 16th, a double bogey 6 at the 17th and a birdie 3 at the last for 37 home.
“I could only hack out of the long grass at the 16th and finished up with three putts for a 6,” said Miss Thomson, who reached the semi-finals of the recent Scottish championship at Barassie.
“My putting is a bit suspect at the moment but it could come right tomorrow, you never know,” she said.
Michele was playing with Anna Nordqvist, the tall, blonde Swede who had a 69 for 145.
Leading the field on six-under-par 138 was 17-year-old Spaniard Carlota Ciganda who had a 68, despite driving with a five-wood for most of the round “to keep the ball out of the long grass and heather.”
SALLY IMPROVES BY THREE
She was only two shots ahead of her compatriot, Azahara Munoz, who had a 68 for 140. Azahara was leading qualifier at Royal County Down last year before losing in the first round.
Sally Watson, a 15-year-old student at the IMG David Leadbetter Golf Academy at Bradenton, Florida, improved by three shots for a 74, despite a run of four-over-par from the 10th to the 13th which included a double bogey 6 at the 10th.
Sally, who had a birdie at the second and eight pars in an outward one-under 36, did birdie the short 14th and the long 16th although she let another shot slip at the 15th in an inward three-over 38.
Krystle Caithness finished with a triple bogey 7 at the 18th for a 76 and a tally of 154.
“I hit my drive right and was in the long grass. From there, I hacked out across the fairway into the left rough and had to take a penalty drop,” said Krystle who had birdied the second and third on her way to an outward half of one-under 36. She bogeyed the eighth and the 10th and then had seven straight pars before her last-hole misfortune.
Rachael Livingstone (Musselburgh Old) had a 74 for 155, very much on the borderline after bogeying the 15th, 16th and 17th. The high sports wer birdies at the third and fifth in one-under 36 to the turn.
Sara Bishop (Cochrane Castle) also hit the 155 mark with a 88.
Anne Laing had a 79 for 157 and Gemma Webster a pair of 81s for 162.
Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle) had scores of 90 and 81 for 171.
