SEASON-ENDING MISSED-CUT BLOW
FOR JORDAN & EAST TENNESSEE
TEAM-MATES
The 2006-2007 American college season ended on a bitterly disappointing note for Fraserburgh’s Jordan Findlay and the rest of the East Tennessee State University golf team, including Edinburgh-born Welsh Walker Cup player Rhys Davies.
From fourth place in the team standings at the beginning of the third day, East Tennessee State plummeted to 18th place and missed the 54-hole cut by three strokes in the NCAA Division 1 men's championship at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club, Williamsburg in Virginia.
Findlay had the best individual third-round score within the team – a two-over-par 70 which gave him a three-round total of 217.
Rhys Davies, pictured right at the conclusion of his third round, playing in his final college event after 10 wins on the US circuit over four years, had a 73 for 211. Although joint 12th in the individual standings, Davies is also eliminated from the fourth and final round because East Tennessee State missed the cut.
Paradoxically, some players with poorer three-round totals than Davies will play the fourth round because their university teams did beat the cut.
The system underlines the fact that in US college golf, TEAM results are paramount. Individual scores are very much a secondary issue. But you would think that in the NCAA Division 1 championship, the season-ending finale, they would allow say the top 50 in the individual standings after three rounds to play the final round. One of them might have won the championship …. but the championship is for TEAMS, not individuals.
