TEENAGE TOPPERS MICHELE AND KRYSTLE
DEFY ALWOODLEY RAIN TO REACH LAST 16

Teenagers Michele Thomson and Krystle Caithness swept into the last 16 of the Ladies British open amateur championship on another day of relentless rain at Alwoodley Golf Club, Leeds.
They are the only two Scots through to Friday morning's third round. Well done, girls!
More than two inches of rain has fallen in 24 hours at the Leeds venue but it didn’t dampen the spirits of Michele from Ellon, Aberdeenshire and Krystle from Cellardyke, Fife.
Making her debut in the prestigious event, Miss Thomson, beaten semi-finalist in the Scottish championship last month, produced two master strokes in scoring a 6 and 5 win over Canada’s Stephanie Sherlock in the second round of the match-play stages.
Michele holed a chip shot from 40yd for a winning birdie at the first and then sank her approach from 100yd for another winning birdie at the sixth.
Four up at the turn, Michele finished off the match in roughly par figures with wins at the 11th and 13th.
“I’m playing well and it’s tougher for my dad, who’s my caddie and he has the job of keeping the clubs dry in this awful weather, than it is for me playing,” said Michele who has no regrets after cutting short a scheduled four-year golf scholarship at Jacksonville State University, Alabama after only five months.
“There was no golf coach there and I felt my game was deteriorating without technical advice,” she said.
Krystle Caithness, who has signed up to join Georgia University for four years in the autumn, knocked out the No 3 seed, Jodi Ewart (Catterick) by 2 and 1 in her opening tie after rising at 4am to be at the course for a 5.45 play-off , which she won through to get into the match-play stages.
After beating Jodie, Krystle came back from two down after seven holes to win by 4 and 2 against Valentine Derrey, a student at Texas Christian University and beaten finalist in the British girls championship at Lanark in 2004.
Miss Caithness spoiled her opponent’s 21st birthday celebrations in turned her fortunes around by winning the eight, ninth and ninth to be one up and clinching victory with successes at the 13th, 14th and 16th.
Krystle now plays Rachel Connor (Manchester), teenage daughter of a Scots-born club professional. Rachel had the best win of her young life, beating Irish Curtis Cup player Tara Delaney (Carlow), ranked No 42 on the American college circuit, by 5 and 4 in the second round.
Louise Kenney (Pitreavie) went down by 5 and 4 to England international Rachel Bell, playing in her home county of Yorkshire.
Scottish champion Jenna Wilson from Strathaven lost by 2 and 1 to Karin Kinnerud (Sweden) after being all square on the 14th tee.
In a late shock, the No 2 seed, Azahara Munoz (Spain) was beaten 3 and 2 by Kira Meixner from Vancouver. Earlier in the day, the No 3 and 4 seeds, Jodi Ewart (Catterick) and Melissa Reid (Chevin) were beaten.
