ANNE RYAN AND NIECE
SAMMY SCOOP THE
GOLSPIE SILVERWARE
By ROBIN WILSON
Local Pam Mackay was unable to defend the Golspie Women’s Open Silver Salver, which left the way open for Tain’s Anne Ryan to regain the scratch prize and the Tain club doubled its silverware haul when the scratch winner’s niece, Sammy Vass carried away the Simpson Quaich for the best overall handicap score.
As the early morning rain showers eased it was teenage Sammy Vass (15), who, the previous Saturday had lost in the Tain championship final to her other aunt, Mary Smith, who posted the first sub 80 score. Miss Vass had equal halves of 38 for 76 but was soon overtaken by Mrs. Ryan who, with excellent iron play, birdied the fifth, sixth and ninth holes to record an outward half of 36. Mrs. Ryan had a couple of three putts on the inward half to raise her count to 38 to win with a three over par 74.
Mary Smith, the third member of the Tain quartet, came in with a 78. Completing the family's domination of the Silver Division, Sammy’s younger sister Julie (13) was handicap runner up to her elder sister.
Local stalwart Anne Macrae made the only impression in the Silver Division with a third handicap place and with it she won the Matheson Trophy for best local. In the Bronze Division Anne Mackenzie Durness and Angela Grant (Brora) repulsed the locals. Mrs. Mackenzie posted the best gross with a 97 and Mrs. Grant’s nett 75 carried away the one remaining trophy, the Pearl Mackay Memorial, with her net return of 75 winning on the better inward half comparison over Irene Hart (Royal Dornoch).
The prizes and trophies were present by Golspie Match Secretary, Arnie Bevan.
