£4.2 MILLION PURSE FOR THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP
Total prize money for The Open Championship at Carnoustie will be £4.2 million, an increase of £200,000 on the 2006 figure. The 2007 Champion will receive a cheque for £750,000, an increase of £30,000 from last year.
The additional £200,000 will be distributed amongst the field of 156 players with an average rise of 5%.
“We are pleased to announce this year’s Open Championship prize fund” said Peter Dawson, Chief Executive of The R&A.
“Equating to US$8.4 million, this increased prize money reflects our goal of maintaining the position of The Open Championship at the forefront of world golf.”
The player who finishes in 70th place will receive £9,500 while the competitor in 156th place will receive £2,100.
When Paul Lawrie won The Open in 1999, he received £350,000 from a prize fund of £2 million.
