TWO SCOTS IN TOP SIX OF BRITISH WOMEN’S
MID-AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Two Scottish exiles, Valerie Melvin and Caroline Agnew finished joint second and sixth respectively today (Sunday) in the 54-hole British women’s mid-amateur stroke-play championship won by seven strokes by Emma Duggleby (Malton & Norton) at Frilford Heath Golf Club, Oxfordshire..
Valerie, pictured right, beaten by Catriona Matthew in the 1994 Scottish women’s amateur championship at Gullane, has lived and worked in the United States for several years.
She had scores of 78, 75 and 74 for 227 to tie with Australian Bronwyn Mullins-Lane fro second place behind Miss Duggleby. Valerie birdied the second, third, ninth and 12th in halves of 35 and 39. Her Australian rival had an eagle 3 at the par-5 sixth in her final round of 73.
Emma’s scores of 72, 76 and 72 for a one-over-par tally of 220 underlined the fact that if ever a player retired from international selection far too early, as Curtis Cup player Emma did voluntarily in 2004, it was her. She is still only 35.
Caroline Agnew, pictured left, Scottish Under-18 girls champion in 1993 and beaten by Elaine Moffat in the Scottish women’s final of 1998 at North Berwick, moved south in pursuit of work and now plays out of Newmarket Links Golf Club and is also a Cambridgeshire & Huntingdonshire county player.
She had scores of 77, 79 and 77 for 233, parring the last eight holes of the tournament.
Fife county player Jocelyn Carthew (Ladybank) finished joint 15th on 244 with scores of 82, 85 and 77.
Former Scottish senior champion Pamela Willilamson (Baberton) was joint 28th on 251 with rounds of 3, 86 and 82.
