British girls championship starts at Southerndown

C ARLY (80) jt 80th - ONLY 64 QUALIFY
AFTER 2nd QUALIFYING ROUND
European Young Masters' champion Carly Booth from Comrie suffered an unexpected form slump in the first qualifying round of the British girls' open amateur championship at Southerndown Golf Club, South Wales today.
Only the leading 64 players in a capacity field of 144 at the end of Tuesday's second round will go forward to the match-play stages.
At the start of Tuesday's second round, 15-year-old Carly will be lying joint 80th after a returning an eight-over-par score of 80. So she needs to improve considerably to banish the thought that she might not qualify.
Carly, pictured left, has been playing well in recent weeks - Scottish Under-21 and Under-18 titles and the European Young Masters crown have all been added to her impressive CV.
But, at Southerndown, where she was a member of the victorious Scotland girls team last week, Carly had nightmare double bogey 7s at the 12th and 13th in halves of 40. She did have birdies at the sixth and 18th but not enough to get her nearer to the par of 72.
Sally Watson from South Queensferry, beaten finalist last year, is the top Scot in joint fourth place with a par 72 - three shots behind the leader, yet another five-star Spanish prospect, Ana Fernandez de Diego. Sally matched the par with halves of 35 and 37.

In fact, she could have been leading the field but for a disastrous finish of bogey-bogey-double bogey.
Earlier in the inward half she had birdied the 10th and 12th and achieved an eagle 3 at the long 13th.
On the outward half, Sally had a birdie at the sixth and a bogey at the seventh.
Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle) and Roseanne Niven (Crieff) both had 73s. Pamela started slowly with bogeys at the first and second but she dropped only one more shot, at the 16th, and had birdies at the sixth and 18th in halves of 36 and 37.
Roseanne, like Sally Watson, was cruising alongwith coming up to the last three holes, having birdied the fourth, sixth, 11th and 13th with only two shots dropped, at the third and 10th. Then the Crieff teenager, who will be returning soon to the University of California-Berkeley, suddenly dropped three shots to par in one hole with a triple bogey 7 at the 16th. Her halves were 34 and 39.
Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) had a steady 75 to be sharing 20th place.
