SAMMY VASS (15) PIPS TRACY LAUGHLAND
FOR ROYAL DORNOCH OPEN TOP PRIZE

By ROBIN WILSON

Fifteen year old Sammy Vass (Tain) won her first adult open competition when a two over par 78 from the five-handicapper beat a quality field at Royal Dornoch.
Included in the line-up were local club champion and course record holder Cara Gruber, Tracy Laughland (Mortonhall), Northern Counties champion Jenny Milne (Elgin) and Surrey county player Julia Brooks (Croham Hurst).
But, with a three-birdie inward half of 39 to match her outward count, Sammy won by a shot from Tracy Laughland who is a member at Dornoch.
Tracy won the confined silver medal but squandered the outright win with a 7-5-7 finish for 42 home.
