SCHALLENBERG AND MUNOZ QUALIFY FOR
MATCH-PLAY IN US WOMEN'S AMATEUR

Europeans Katharina Schallenberg from Germany and Spain's Azahara Munoz figured among the 64 qualifiers for the match-play stages of the United States women's amateur championship at Crooked Stick Golf Club, Carmel in Indiana onTuesday.
Top-ranked amateur Stacy Lewis and high school junior Kristina Wong shared the leading qualifier honours.
Lewis, the individual NCAA Division I champion, and Wong, 32nd in the Golfweek/Titleist junior rankings, both posted rounds of 70-69 for a five-under 139 total.
Lewis knows she now has to deal with the unofficial USGA medalist (leading qualifier) jinx.
“The medalist hasn’t had that much success,” said Lewis, a semi-finalist last year. “I was just playing for par and I got the putter rolling.”
Wong was equally thrilled: “Being medalist would be cool but I couldn’t get too hung up on it,” she said.
Lewis and Wong finished one stroke ahead of three 17-year-olds from Korea: So Yeon Ryu, Mi Jung Hur and Jennifer Song, who tied for low amateur at the 2007 US Women’s Open.
Only players with 36-hole totals of six-over-par 150 and better made it through to the match-play stages - tying the lowest cut in the 112-year history of the event.
Defending champion Kimberly Kim flirted with missing the cut, but rebounded with a three-under-par 33 on her back nine to easily secure a match-play berth.
Golfweek’s top-ranked collegiate Amanda Blumenhurst also advanced after opening with a four-over 40 on the front nine Monday.
All four of last year’s semi-finalists qualified: Lewis, Kim, Germany's Katharina Schallenberg (who lost in the final to Kimberly Kim) and Lindy Duncan.
Notables failing to qualify included 2007 U.S. Girls' Junior champion Kristen Park, 2006 U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur champion Meghan Bolger, three-time USA Curtis Cupper and 1998 U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur champion Virginia Grimes and two-time USGA Senior Women's Amateur champion Diane Lang.
