ENGLAND HAMMER SCOTS' TITLE
HOPES ON DAY 2 AT DUNBAR
Even a draw against Ireland would see England win the women’s home amateur international golf championship for the third year in a row at Dunbar Golf Club tomorrow.
The English snuffed out the challenge of Scotland’s young team with a 7 1/2-1 1/2 victory while Ireland, beaten by the Scots on the opening day, bounced back with a 7-2 win over Wales.
The writing was on the wall in capital letters for the Scots when England made a 3-0 clean sweep of the morning foursomes. That meant Scotland had to take the singles 5-1 to turn the tables and that was never on.
Scottish champion Jenna Wilson did not win a hole in the top match against her English counterpart Naomi Edwards until the 11th but give the Strathaven player her due. She finished like a train with further successes at the 15th, 16th and 17th before losing by one hole on the 18th green.
Carly Booth, the 15-year-old Comrie girl who, like seven of her team-mates, is making her debut at this level, scored a very good 3 and 2 win over the vastly more experienced Rachel Bell. Carly won five holes in a row from the third to the seventh and was three up at the turn.
Laura Murray from Alford was four down after six holes to Kerry Smith before finding her feet. She won the 13th, 14th and 16th but Kerry won the 15th on her way to a 2 and 1 victory.
Megan Briggs, 17, from Kilmacolm lost five holes in a row from the eighth to the 12th in losing by 4 and 2 to Elizabeth Bennett.
Michele Thomson (McDonald Ellon) was two up after 11 on Rachel Jennings but the English girl squared the game with successes at the 12th and 13th. The last five holes were halved for a square game.
Derbyshire’s Melissa Reid has had to pull out of the England team to seek treatment for a wrist injury. Reserve Holly Aitchison from Bedfordshire has joined the team.
+Apologies to Carly Booth for "ageing" her in earlier versions of the above report. Carly is, of course, still 15 years old. Her 16th birthday is not until June 2008.
