Irish Ladies Golf Union Press Release

ILGU LADIES SENIORS OPEN STROKE-PLAY
ENNIS GOLF CLUB

10-12 September 2007

VIKKI THOMAS TO DEFEND TITLE

Curtis Cup legend Vicki Thomas will once again travel from Wales to defend her Irish title at the ILGU Seniors Open Stroke-play Championship, Ennis Golf Club in Co. Clare, from September 10 to 12.
Last year, Thomas pipped Ireland’s Marliyn Henderson and England’s Susan Pickles by just one stroke to claim the title.
Canadian Alison Murdoch, in search of her hat-trick, was a further two shots behind and is once again travelling to compete in this year’s event.
This year’s tournament is as competitive as ever with the majority of the field availing of the extra practice in advance of the following week’s Senior British Open at Copt Heath. With the full Irish squad from the Seniors European Team Championships in action, other notable entrants are local lady Valerie Hassett, fresh from Ennis’s Suzuki Senior Cup victory, and Germany’s Chris Utermarck and Canadian Diane Williams who lead the challenge of 30 overseas competitors.
In a change from the 36 hole format, the 90 strong field will play two 18 hole stroke-play rounds over two consecutive days from Monday with the top 30 (plus ties) qualifying for the final 18 holes on Wednesday.
Following the Championship, the Ireland team to play at the Seniors Home Internationals at Royal Tara in Co. Meath, from October 2 to 4, will be announced. Positions in the side will be determined by ranking in the Order of Merit and a wild-card pick selected by team captain Rhona Fanagan (Milltown).
