AA INSURANCE LADIES GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS
ALL-IRELAND FINALS
ATHLONE GOLF CLUB
Belvoir Park Golf Club are the AA Insurance Junior Cup champions of Ireland while Larne Golf Club defeated Donabate in a tight contest to take the senior foursomes title.
In the first of the finals, Belvoir Park and Corrstown more or less matched each other for the first nine holes, though once Belvoir had conceded their shots, they gained the lead in the first three matches, which allowed them to claim the AA Insurance Junior Cup.
Dun Laoghaire Golf Club won the AA Insurance Minor Cup by defeating Rockmount in the final. Sheila Clancy-Nolan secured the first win for DunLaoghaire but Rockmount's Carol McGrath cancelled out this win.
Dun Laoghaire’s Phyl Glavin and Jo Ebbs secured the advantage for Dun Laoghaire to take the cup home.
Enniscorthy, with two teams in the finals, secured the Intermediate Cup early in the day and followed up with the Junior Foursomes title to boot!
They battled it out with East Cork and Gort respectively. In the Intermediate Cup, the first three matches were close encounters but the fourth match was an emphatic win for Enniscorthy’s Stellah Sinnott which ultimately secured the cup.
Enniscorthy stormed ahead in the foursomes with the third pairing of Michele Browne and Ursula Cousins winning 7 and 5 followed by a two-hole win for Julie McCarthy with Pauline Byrne to claim the title.
Larne are Senior Foursomes Champions. They beat Donabate in the All-Ireland final. Irish golfing legend Mary McKenna with partner Fionnuala Forde made a great start for Donabate with a 7 and 6 victory but Larne’s team Captain Roma English with Sarah O’Neill put in a fine performance in the top match to defeat Pat Doran and Aileen Hanratty.
A “never say die” performance by both Larne and Donabate third pairings of Gail McNabb with Barbara O’Neill and Deirdre Bardshaw with Patricia Morris enthralled spectators with a superb display of nip and tuck golf.
It was two hours after Donabate’s first victory that the Larne couple managed to secure the winning point on the 20th green.
The K Club defeated Galway Bay 3-2, although 2-1 down after the first three pairings. They secured the Challenge Cup by taking the last two matches with Phyllis Kelly and Margaret Canavan both winning with 3 and 2 margins.
The K Club Challenge Cup team followed up their clubs’ winning streak, having recently been crowned the Irish mixed foursomes champions…… the final also staged at Athlone Golf Club.
