After being represented in the NCAA Regional championship for the third straight year, the Jacksonville University, Florida men's golf team has signed four players for the new 2007-2008 season college season with the women's golf team adding two.
The women's team gains the talents of Danielle Gibb and Jessica Williams. Both players are expected to push for a spot on the travel squad when the join the team in the fall.
On the men's side, Gavin St. John Frost, Stephen Healy, Michael Maine and Timothy Adams will join the program and will compete immediately for a spot in the starting five.
The group sports an international flair as all four of the men's signees are from Great Britain or Ireland with Gibb being from England on the women's side.
"This is a very impressive group of student-athletes and I am pleased that they are joining our program," said JU head coach Jim Taketa. "We have some big shoes to fill on both teams and the addition of these young men and women will help with that greatly."
IMPRESSIVE JUNIOR
Gibb comes to JU from Kent, England after an impressive junior career. The Kent County girls champion, Gibb was a semi-finalist at the Kent Ladies Championship and was a finalist in the Faldo Series in England. She holds the course record with a 73 at Rochester & Corbham.
The trip overseas is a family affair for Gibb as her brother, Jordan, is a sophomore student on the men's team at the University of North Florida.
Willliams, a former rodeo star, is making the move to collegiate golf after playing throughout Florida on the junior circuit. She has improved quickly under the watchful eye of former JU golf standout, Tom McClurg.
"Jessica and Danielle are both very talented players," Taketa said. "Danielle's competitive experience gives her an edge in making the transition to the collegiate level. Jessica has come a long way in a short period of time and her work ethic will allow her to improve more as the season progresses."
Frost, a native of Berkshire in the United Kingdom, captained the South of England team at the national championship and qualified for the English Schools team. A two-time captain of the Berkshire Schools Title, he has won all of his singles matches for the under-21 team. He sports a handicap of +1.2 and a stroke average of 70.2.
Healy joins the Dolphins from Clougher, Ireland, where he is a member of the Ireland International team. He captured the prestigious Nissan Irish Boys Championship last year and was recently selected to the six-man Irish European Team that has been competing around Europe this summer. Healy also has the ability to go low, with his lowest competitive round being a seven-under par, 65.
SCOTTISH TRADITION
Michael Main will be keeping the Scottish tradition alive at JU, coming across the pond from Fife. A member of Scotland's under-16 team, Main is one of the most decorated junior golfers in Scotland. In the Scottish Boys Championship, Main defeated European legend Sam Torrance's son Daniel en route to an appearance in the finals.
Rounding out the newcomers is Timothy Adams from Dorset, England. He captured three tournaments recently, including the McNaughton Salver with a round of 65. A member of the West of England Public School Championship team, Adams captured third place at the South West of England Youths Championships with round of 67 and 70.
The newcomers look to replace a record setting group that set the bar high for years to come. The Dolphins lost four players to graduation on the two teams - Duncan Stewart, Jamie Kennedy and Russell Knox on the men's side with Camilla Loeveid being the only departee on the women's team.
