LORNA BENNETT WINS ENTERTAINING FINAL
TO TAKE SCOTTISH SENIOR WOMEN’S TITLE

Ladybank’s Lorna Bennett, a Scotland women’s international team player from 1987 to 1991, won the Scottish senior women’s amateur match-play golf championship for the first time at Glenbervie Golf Club today.
It is not her first over-50s national title. She won the Scottish veteran women’s match-play championship at Blairgowrie in 2004.
Lorna, the No 3 qualifier, was the highest seeded player left in the championship after the top two seeds, Kathleen Sutherland (Royal Montrose) and Fiona Hunter (Baberton), were surprisingly eliminated in Saturday’s first round.
Miss Bennett only had to play the 17th hole once on her way to the title and that was in beating Margaret Tough (Falkirk) by 2 and 1 in an entertaining final.
Two down after six holes, Margaret won the seventh, eighth and ninth to be one up at the turn.
Then Lorna regained the initiative and the lead by winning the 10th and 11th. Then followed five closely-fought halved holes. Miss Bennett clinched victory by winning the 17th.
The second-flight match-play for early-round losers ended in a Sutherland v Hunter final, which ended in a 2 and 1 win for Fiona Hunter.
