English Ladies Golf Association Press Release

BOYS BEAT GIRLS IN ENGLAND MATCH
AT OGBOURNE DOWNS, WILTSHIRE

England’s Under-18 girls lost their annual match against the England Under-16 boys when they were beaten 12-3 at Ogbourne Downs, Wiltshire.
Team captain Sara Garbutt said: “The boys played very well. They were particularly good at the short game and a number of them were under par.”
The two teams played lay-outs of similar length and, with the undulating course demanding long carries, the girls found it difficult to compete. They played from the yellow tees and their yardage was just 253 yards less than the boys, who were off the white tees.
The girls received one shot in the morning and two in the afternoon.
In the morning foursomes three matches went to the 18th but the scoreline at lunch was 4½-½ in the boys’ favour. The girls’ half was provided by the Hampshire pair of Raffi Dyer and Katie Mundy who were trailing early in their game but who fought back with three consecutive birdies.
In the singles, English schools’ champion Hannah Barwood had the better of an all-Gloucestershire clash against Chris Lloyd. Her sharp short game helped her to score several birdies, including one on the 18th which sealed her win by two holes.
Kent’s Sarah Tyson produced an impressive performance against Max Smith. Sarah was never down in her match, always kept control and won by 2 and 1.
Her county colleague Sian Evans secured the girls’ other half point when she got up-and-down from 40 yards at the last in her match against James Burnett.
Meanwhile, Nottinghamshire’s Katie Best and Alex Peters were both beaten on the 18th, with Alex losing to a birdie. Raffi Dyer was also closed out of her singles when her opponent chipped in for a birdie on the 17th. The girls’ team was:
Heidi Baek (Felixstowe Ferry), Hannah Barwood (Knowle), Katie Best (Sherwood Forest), Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa), Raffi Dyer (Hayling), Sian Evans (Faversham), Katie Mundy (Dunwood Manor), Alex Peters (Notts Ladies), Helen Searle (West End), Sarah Tyson (London).
