Gibson Cup Full Report

FIRST TIME WINNERS OF 100 YEAR OLD GIBSON CUP

Report from Anne Brownie, Chair of Gibson Cup Committee
In near perfect conditions for golf, the Centenary of the Gibson Cup took place at the Braid Hills golf course over the weekend of 29th/30th September. The winners of Sunday afternoon’s matchplay final were Wendy Nicholson and Jennifer Henderson both from Broomieknowe GC. Wendy and Jennifer had the top score from Saturday’s qualification round. The final was a game of two halves with runners-up Norma Richmond and Ray Lynch (both Murrayfield GC) being ahead before a run of four holes in a row after the turn won by Wendy and Jennifer led to their first success in the Gibson Cup by a margin of 5 & 4.

More than 120 ladies (including many past winners) played in Saturday morning’s qualifying medal foursomes round. Reflecting the benign weather conditions and excellent condition of the golf course, competitors had to break the par of 72 to qualify for the matchplay stages of the Gibson Cup. To mark the Centenary, a second flight of matchplay was introduced which was won by Anne Stokes of Harburn and Jenny Syme of Bogside Irvine .Their opponents in this closely contested final were Jennifer Bryans and Helen Warnock (both Harburn).

In recent years pairings from Harburn and Lothianburn GC have featured strongly in the Gibson Cup. Although, unusually, no Lothianburn couple made the matchplay stages this year, the winners of the Consolation Salver were Ruth Brown and Christine Clements with 42 points, edging out fellow Lothianburn club members (and last year’s Salver winners) Catherine Stewart and Janet Begrie who had 40 points.

To mark the Centenary of the Cup presented by Lord Provost James Gibson in 1907, Bailie Alastair Paisley represented the Lord Provost’s Office at the Prizegiving. Bailie Paisley kindly presented prizes from tournament sponsors “The Ladies Golf Centre, www.golfing-lady.com” to the main prizewinners as well as all the special hole prizes sponsored by local businesses. After the Prizegiving a Centenary celebration was held at which this year’s competitors and past winners and committee shared their Gibson Cup experiences.

In summary, the weekend was an outstanding success with great golf, wonderful weather and fantastic fun – a fitting way to celebrate the first 100 years of the Gibson Cup.
