OWN AGAINST US COLLEGE ELITE

Scots teenagers Roseanne Niven (pictured left) from Crieff and Krystle Caithness (pictured right) from Cellardyke, Fife are tackling the elite of the American women's college golf circuit in the Stanford Intercollegiate tournament over Tiger Wood's old stamping ground in California - and holding their own.
University of California Berkeley student Roseanne, 18, and Krystle, also 18 and a freshman student at the University of Georgia, both returned first-round 73s over the par-71, 6,089 lay-out.
Roseanne, starting at the 10th, bogeyed the 10th, 13th, 16th and first but she had birdies at the 11th and 2nd.
Krystle also started at the 10th and it was a bad hole for her, costing her a double bogey 6 but she birdied the short second and long 16th before dropping another shot at the 18th. The first hole of her second nine was also costly for the Great Britain & Ireland international player. She ran up a double bogey 7 at the long first but then got a birdie 4 at the longth seventh and a birdie 2 at the short eighth before finishing her round with a bogey at the ninth.
The Scots are a highly creditable joint 15th in a field of 93 players which includes most of the top players on the American women's college circuit.
American Curtis Cup ace Amanda Blumenherst justified her No 1 ranking a sparkling five-underper 66 to lead by two shots from Mari Chun (Stanford), playing over her home course.
English women's stroke-play champion Jodi Ewart from Yorkshire, a second-year student at New Mexico University, was one of a bunch of players in third place on 69.

Former British girls championship winner at Lanark, Azahara Munoz (Arizona State) from Spain) is joint 11th on 72.

Sweden's Anna Nordqvist (Arizona State), also a former British girls champion and beaten finalist in the 2006 and 2007 British women's championships, had a bad day at the office by her own high standards. She is back in a tie for 39th place on 76. Her round included a double-bogey 5 at a short hole.
The tournament is over three rounds.
