The first round of the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational, played over the par-72, 6,344yd University of Texas golf course at Austin, did not bring out the best in the three British students in the field of 90.

GB&I Curtis Cup team selection Jodi Ewart (New Mexico University) and Gemma Webster (Ohio State University) from Glasgow go into the second round in joint 24th place after hitting the seven-over-par 79 mark.

And Hannah Burke (Baylor University, Texas) is sharing 52nd place after an 82.

Jodi Ewart from Catterick, Yorkshire had not a single birdie in her halves of 41 and 38. She had a double bogey 6 at the seventh and dropped single shots to par at the second, foufrth, eighth, 14th and 16th.

Gemma Webster, Cal Carson Golf Agency image copyright above, had a little bit of everything in her halves of 37 out and 42 back. The highlights were an eagle 3 at the fifth and birdies at the first and 13th.

But she had double bogey 6s at the sixth, 17th and 18th and bogeys at the second, seventh, 10th, 12th and 15th.

Hannah Burke had five bogeys and back-to-back double bogey 6s at the 12th and 13th in a nightmare run from the 10th to the 16th. She had halves of 37 and 45.

US Curtis Cup team selection Stacy Lewis (Arkansas Univesity) had a 74 to be joint third behind Ornella Jouven (Florida), surprise lead with a par-matching 72.

There was some consolation for Jodi Ewart in that her team, New Mexico University, were leading the team event at the end of the first day with a total of 303, two ahead of Florida.
