Sue Ellis to defend English seniors’ championship

EWGA Press Release

A top-quality field, including a host of internationals, will contest the Senior Women’s English Close Championship at Stoneham Golf Club, Hampshire, from April 15-18.

Defending champion Sue Ellis, from Ferndown in Dorset, leads a field of 86 players with handicaps as low as scratch.

There will be strong local interest in the event with eight Hampshire players in the field. Among them is Chris Quinn, the scratch golfer from Hockley who won this title in 2004 and 2005 and was British seniors’ champion in 2006.

The Hampshire contingent includes two more players in the championship’s Division A, for handicaps up to six: Sue Pickles (Lee-on-the-Solent) and Christine Stirling (Meon Valley). Playing in Division B are: Anne Aylward (Meon Valley), Lynne Cowser (Alresford), Jean Dalton (Meon Valley), Dale Hinton (Corhampon) and Jane Shergold (Blackmoor).

The championship promises to be extremely competitive. All seven members of England’s winning team from the 2007 Senior Home Internationals are in the field. Alongside Sue Ellis and Chris Quinn will be former Curtis Cup player Carole Caldwell (Sunningdale), English senior strokeplay champion Sue Dye (Delamere Forest), Hilary Smyth (Pannal), Christine Watson (Beaconsfield) and Pat Wrightson (Huddersfield).

Among those making their debut in seniors golf will be Janet Collingham, from Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire, who was British amateur champion in 1987. Another newcomer is former Norfolk champion Jo Ashmore (Barnham Broom).

Stoneham Golf Club has previously hosted such prestigious events as the Brabazon Trophy and the English ladies’ strokeplay championship. For this tournament the course will be set at 5506 yards, par 72.

All competitors in both divisions will play two strokeplay qualifying rounds,
18 holes on each of Tuesday and Wednesday, April 15 and 16. The top 16 players in each division will go forward to the matchplay stages, which will be played on Thursday and Friday, April 17 and 18. Spectators are welcome.

Online scoring will be available throughout the tournament: www.englishwomensgolf.org
