Title-holder Sue Ellis fails to
qualify for match-play
Hampshire's Chris Quinn leads the qualifiers for the match-play stages of the Senior Women's English Close Championship at Stoneham, Hampshire.
The former champion pipped Kent's Geraldine Bray to the top spot by virtue of her better second round. Chris, who plays at Hockley, scored 77 and 76 while Geraldine (Littlestone) shot 75 and 78.
"I haven't played a lot all winter and I am absolutely thrilled to put in two scores in the 70s. That was what I was aiming for," said Chris, who was a member at Stoneham in the 1970s.
"I do know the course - but on the other hand people do expect you to be able to get round it!" She didn't disappoint them and signed off her second round with a birdie 4.
The top 16 players qualified for the championship match-play stages and the draw includes two other Hampshire players. Sue Pickles (Lee on the Solent) defied hip pain to return a second round 76, and Chris Stirling (Meon Valley) returned a pair of 79s.
Former British champion Janet Collingham (Sherwood Forest) fell away today with an 84 but still qualified comfortably on her seniors debut.
Senior stroke-play champion Sue Dye (Delamere Forest) is also safely through.
However, defending champion Sue Ellis (Ferndown) failed to make it to the knock-out stages. She was one of three players tied for the last two places in the draw and lost out on her second 18.
Sue finished with two bogeys for an 83 while Bev Belcher (Olton) birdied the 17th and 18th for 76, and Paula Parker (Abbotsley) scored 81.
The top qualifier in Division B is Sue McKeon (Harleyford) who scored 84 and 80. She finished two ahead of Sue Pidgeon (Wrekin) (82 and 84) and a further shot clear of Judy McCairns (Oxford Ladies) (83 and 84) and Gillian Stump (Sherwood Forest) 81 and 86.
