Geraldine Bray leads English
senior women's championship
Kent’s Geraldine Bray holds a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Senior Women’s English Close Championship at Stoneham, Hampshire.
The 2006 senior stroke-play champion from Littlestone played the back nine in level par for an opening score of three-over 75.
“I was very pleased with that. It’s a tricky course and you have to play percentage shots,” said Geraldine, who drove the ball well and hit most fairways.
Her score puts her one clear of former British champion Janet Collingham, from Nottinghamshire, who is making her seniors’ debut in this event. “I’m the new kid on the block!” she joked.
Janet has played little competitive golf over recent years and is enjoying her return to the scene. She was satisfied with her opening score, compiled with a steady 14 pars and four bogeys.
“It’s early in the season and I didn’t really know what to expect but I putted well and it was fine.”
A shot further back, in joint third place, is Hampshire’s Chris Quinn, who has twice won this title and has also been British seniors’ champion. She played the back nine in one-over 37 – despite a three-putt double bogey on the 18th.
Two more Hampshire players are in a group sharing fifth place: Chris Stirling and Sue Pickles both scored 79. Meanwhile defending champion, Sue Ellis of Dorset, had a disappointing finish to her round, dropping five shots in the last four holes to finish on 80.
The championship’s Division B is led by Gillian Stump (Sherwood Forest) who scored 81 and is a stroke ahead of Sue Pidgeon (Wrekin) and Karen Lobb (Northants County)
After the second stroke-play round the top 16 players in both divisions will qualify for the matchplay stages of the championship.
Leading scores:
75 Geraldine Bray (Littlestone).
76 Janet Collingham (Sherwood Forest).
77 Elaine Elliott (Whitley Bay), Chris Quinn (Hockley).
79 Chris Stirling (Meon Valley), Susan Pickles (Lee on the Solent), Rozalyn Adams (Addington Court), Kate Charles (Burnham & Berrow), Felicity Coulter (Banstead Downs).
80 Barbara Laird (Sandiway), Pat Wrightson (Huddersfield), Sue Ellis (Ferndown).
81 Carolyn Kirk (Ganton), Christine Watson (Beaconsfield), Gabi Heuchel (East Berkshire).
82 Sue Dye (Delamere Forest), Jo Ashmore (Barnham Broom), Paula Parker (Abbotsley), Sue Westall (Copt Heath), Jeannie O’Keeffe (Hankley Common), Pat West (Spalding), Luci Foster (Bramhall), Elspeth Cooper (Calcot Park)
