JANET RALLIES FROM FIVE DOWN TO
REACH LAST FOUR AT STONEHAM
Nottinghamshire’s Janet Collingham fought back from five down to beat Hampshire star Chris Quinn and snatch a place in the semi-finals of the Senior Women’s English Close Championship at Stoneham today.
Janet, a former British champion, said afterwards: “I thought I was on my way home! Nothing seemed to go right on the first few holes. I under-clubbed on the first two and then had a three putt.”
By the seventh she was five down to Chris, the top seed, who has twice won this title. But Janet urged herself to be patient.
“I knew I was playing well, I just had to keep going and see what happened.”
The seventh was the last hole Janet was to lose. From then on she whittled away at the lead, assisted by an impressive ability to get up and down when necessary. She sqared matters on the 15th, took the lead for the first time with a par 4 on the 17th and signed off for a one-up win.
“I am just so pleased,” she said.
Janet is making her debut in seniors golf and has prepared long and hard. She’s working on her game with Hollinwell professional Mike Bradley ... she’s lost two stone and has been improving her fitness with a personal trainer.
In the semi-final Janet will meet Cheshire’s Barbara Laird, who defeated former champion Christine Watson of Buckinghamshire by 5 and 4.
The other semi-final will be contested by Yorkshire’s Carolyn Kirk and Cheshire’s Sue Dye. Carolyn was ahead all the way through her match, moving to five up at one point, before defeating Hampshire’s Sue Pickles 3 and 2.
Sue Dye, the reigning senior stroke-play champion, won a tight tussle with Kent’s Geraldine Bray, who went out of bounds on the last hole.

Sue McKeon (Harleyford) v Karen Lobb (Northants County) and Jose Kellenberger (Camberley Heath) v Sue Pidgeon (Wrekin).
