Krystle only Scot to sparkle in

Women's British Open Qualifier

Curtis Cupper Krystle Caithness, one of seven Scots in the field for today's Final Qualifier, was the only Scot to sparkle and earn one of the 19 places up for grabs in the Ricoh Women's British Open, starting at Sunningdale Golf Club on Thursday.
The 19-year-old from Cellardyke, Fife, toughened up by regular competition on the US college circuit from September to May, deviated from par only three times in qualifying with two shots to spare in joint ninth place with an immaculate round of two-under-par 70 over the Blue Course at The Berkshire Golf Club.
Caithnbess birdied the long sixth in turning in one under par 35 and then dropped a shot at the short 10th before moving to two under for the day with an eagle 3 at the 452yd par-5 16th.
If the qualifier had been over only 17 holes, then Krystle's Curtis Cup team-mate Michele Thomson from the McDonald club, Ellon would have made it no problem. She birdied the fifth and had an eagle 3 at the 476yd par-5 sixth before dropping a shot at the eighth but turning in two-under-par 34.
A birdie at the 11th was the meat in a sandwich of bogeys at the 10th and 14th but all Michele needed was a par for a 71 to qualify with a shot to spare. Instead the Scot had a disastrous double-bogey 6 for a 73 - one shot too many to rub shoulders with Lorena Ochoa and Co come Thursday.
Ladies European Tour pro Clare Queen (The Carrick at Cameron House) failed by two with a two-over-par 74. She needed a great inward half to retrieve the situation after bogeying the first, third and eighth and turning in three-over-par 39. It looked for half-and-hour or so as if Clare would turn it all round because she birdied the 11th and 12th. But her fourth bogey of the day, at the 13th, made it almost mission impossible. She parred her way in.
A third Curtis Cup player in the field, 16-year-old Carly Booth from Comrie failed to make it with a 76 which included a double bogey 5 at the short (207yd) first and a triple bogey 7 at the 353yd 12th. She did have good runs - birdies at the fifth, sixth and ninth, and, too late, birdies at the 16th and 17th in 40 for the inward nine.
Perhaps competing in the European Young Masters at Chantilly, which did not finish until Saturday, and necessitating a flight from France to London in time to play at The Berkshire - with or without a practice round - was asking a little bit too much of a youngster.
Tour pros Kathryn Imrie from Monifieth and Lynn Kenny (Archerfield Links) both shot 77s while Auchterarder amateur Emily Ogilvy, who had cleared the recent first qualifying competition hurdle no problem, had a 78.
Kathryn could not get any inspiration on an inward half which had bogeys at the first, fourth, fifth and sixth. Out in 40, she did biredie the 12th and 14th but cancelled them out and some with bogeys at the 14th, 16th and 18th.
Lynn Kenny had a nightmare start - a triple bogey 8 at the long third and a double bogey 6 at the fifth in reaching the turn in five-over-par 41.
It was all academic after that and Lynn birdied the 11th and 16th but bogeyed the 12th and 17th in matching the inward par of 36.
Emily Ogilvy had her usual share of birdies, at the ninth, 12th, and 16th, but she also had too many shots dropped to entertain any hopes of surving. She had a double bogey 5 at the short fourth, a triple bogey 7 at the 14th and a double bogey 6 at the 15th in halves of 39.
