Charlotte v Sarah for English girls' title

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Cheshire’s Charlotte Wild and Kent’s Sarah Tyson will meet in Saturday’s final of the English girls’ championship at Durham City.
Both players are members of English Women’s Golf Association squads; both were on commanding form in their semi-finals and both won through by the margin of 4 and 3.
Charlotte, 18, beat her county colleague Rachael Goodall (Heswall), 17, while Sarah, 17, defeated Suffolk’s Heidi Baek (Felixstowe Ferry) (14).
“I am really excited,” said Charlotte, who was determined to shine in the championship after she was named only as a reserve for the team for next week’s Girls’ International Matches at Panmure, Carnoustie.
The Mere player took charge early in her match and was four up at the turn, before losing both the 10th and 11th. Her response was to birdie both the 12th and 14th to re-establish her comfortable lead.
A half on the short 15th saw her safely through to the final.
“I played well overall but I was a bit scrappy on two holes. Rachael is a good player and can make birdies from anywhere so even when I was four up I knew I had to keep going,” said Charlotte.
This season Charlotte has retained the Cheshire girls’ championship, won the Northern Foursomes and been third in the Irish stroke-play championship.
Sarah Tyson – like Charlotte – will be playing in her first final. “I’m just really looking forward to tomorrow,” she said. “I’ve never got past the second round before!”
She made very few mistakes in her semi-final and was one-under par and six up after 11 holes. She lost two holes when she missed fairways off the tee and had to chip out but secured her place in the final with a couple of steady halves.
“I got a little bit annoyed with myself when I lost those holes and Heidi was hitting it close.,” said Sarah, who plays at Redlibbets. “But I calmed myself down and stuck at it and I was pleased with the way I played.”
This result is particularly sweet for Sarah, who has been out of action since May with a bad wrist injury.
The Flight Two finalists are Norfolk’s Rebecca Heeles (Royal Norwich) and Yorkshire’s Katie Barraclough (East Brierley).
