Lewis Kirton fades in final round

of Kentucky Intercollegiate

Newmachar member Lewis Kirton, a second-year student at the University of Louisville-Kentucky, faded to a share of 40th place in a field of 77 with a final round of 80 in the Cardinal Intercollegiate golf tournament at Cardinal Club, Simpsonville, Kentucky this week.
Kirton had earlier had sub-par rounds of 71 and 70 over the 7,001yd course (par 72). He finished on five-over-par 221, 21 shots behind the winner, Trey Bowling (Eastern Kentucky) with rounds of 65, 70 and 65.
Kirton was playing as an individual, not as a member of the Louisville squad who won the team title by 15 shots with a 30-under-par total of 834.

Lewis, who hails from Oldmeldrum, suffered from glandular fever earlier in the year and subsequently felt very tired in the closing stages of a three-round tournament.

Although he played well in the North-east District Open at Newburgh during his summer holidays, it may well be that Kirton is still not 100 per cent.
