Roseanne Niven led Scots into
action in Espirito Santo Trophy

FROM KAY SMART IN ADELAIDE
Scotland are well prepared for the challenge facing them in the Worls Amateur Team championships for the Espirito Santo Trophy which began in Adelaide this morning.
“The players like both courses which are being used. Both provide different challenges,”said team captain Fiona Norris.
Scotland are represented by British stroke-play champion Roseanne Niven, Krystle Caithness, who boasted a 100 per cent record in the Curtis Cup match earlier in the summer, and British stroke-play runner-up Kylie Walker.
Neither Niven nor Caithness could play for Scotland in the recent women's home internationals at Wrexham because of their US college commitments.
Niven (California-Berkeley) and Caithness (Georgia) have both flown to Australia from the States and will return there to continue their exploits on the US women's college golf circuits.
Niven led the Scots into action in the first of the four rounds of this gruelling contest being staged over the Grange West and East courses in Adelaide.
Caithness followed and Walker played the anchor role.
They are tackling the par-72 West course first and go out with New Zealand and Spain. The Spaniards are highly rated with the former British Ladies Open amateur champion Carlota Ciganda,Belen Mozo and Azahara Munoz carrying their hopes.
“We have a great team but realise there are many other excellent sides in the tournament – Spain and America are always hot,”said Norris.
In all 48 countries are competing in what is described as the Olympic Games of Golf with South Africa defending the title they won on home soil two years ago.
SLGA national coach Kevin Craggs is also in Adelaide to provide support to the team and the colourful opening ceremony was held in the centre of the city.
In each of the four rounds the leading two scores count.
