Scot's LPGA Tour comeback dreams shattered for another year
Vikki Laing tragedy - Disqualified for signing for a 6 instead of a 7
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Tragedy for Vikki Laing in her bid to get back on the LPGA Tour.
She was disqualified at the end of the third round, having been tied for 11th place after 36 holes.
It was thought that she the Musselburgh exile had score 71, 70 and 76 for a total of one-over-par 217 through 54 holtes.
But it transpired later that she had signed for an incorrect scorecard at the end of Friday's third round - and was disqualified.
The 27-year-old Scot, pictured right, battled tears as she described an unfortunate miscalculation at a critical time.
She took seven strokes on the par-5 16th hole, but inadvertently a 6 was written by her marker on the scorecard. Vikki failed to notice the slip when she checked the scorecard at the end of play and signed for a figure less than she had taken.
It was the first time in the career of the former Curtis Cup player and winner on the Futures Tour last year that she had ever been disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard.
“I don’t ever want to do that again,” said Laing.
Today is the vital fourth round in the LPGA Tour School at Daytona Beach, Florida.
Stacy Lewis, the American who turned pro after the Curtis Cup at St Andrews at the end of May and has never looked back, is leading the players with four-round totals of two-over-par 290 and better who qualfied for the decisive final round.
Stacy had 67 for 15-under-par 273. She is one shot ahead of Michelle Weir (68 for 274).
France's Sophie Giquel is the leading European in joint seventh place after a 69 for 278.
Other Europeans who made it past the fourth-round cut included twice former British amateur champion Louise Stahle (281), Anja Monke (284), Irish-born US Curtis Cup player Alison Walshe (285), Tania Elosegui (285), current British amateur champion Anna Nordqvist (still an amateur) with 296, Melissa Reid (289), Martina Eberl (290) and Emma Cabrera-Bello (290).
South Africans Ashleigh Simon and Stacy Bregman will also be playing on Sunday.
