Europeans held at bay in UCF
Challenge at Red Tail Golf Club
The European "armada" of golfing talent was repelled in the UCF Challenge at Red Tail Golf Club.
The best that the Europeans could do in a top-class field of 95 was a share of sixth place by Sweden's Caroline Hedwall (Oklahoma State), beaten finalist in the "British" at North Berwick last June, and Spain's Belen Mozo (Southern California), past winner of the British girls and women's titles.
Winner was Stephanie Kono (UCLA) with 71, 71 and 66 for the very good total of eight-under-par 208. She won by a shot from Jessica Yadloczky (Florida) and by two from Jennie Lee (Duke).
Duke University, the top-ranked female college golf team, could finish only 13th of 18 and its star player, Curtis Cup ace Amanda Blumenherst, did no better than a tie for 23rd place. She did not break par in any of her three rounds.
UCLA (850) won the team title ahead of Arizona State (857) and Oklahoma State (861).
