Tough for Scots Blake, McGregor

and Wilson on trip to California

Post University, Connecticutt's three Scots - Jamie Blake, a junior (third-year) student from Arbroath, freshmen David McGregor from Helensburgh and Gavin Wilson from Ladybank - all struggled over a man-sized Mission Viejo Country Club course of 7,143yd with a very demanding par of 71 in the 59th Southern California Intercollegiate tournament earlier this week.
The lowest-scoring Post University player was junior Lee Wanklyn from Berkshire. He tied for 31st place in a field of 75 players with scores of 83, 76 and 79 for 238.
Jamie Blake, pictured right, had rounds of 78, 83 and 80 for 241 and a share of 41st place while David McGregor and Gavin Wilson both totalled 251 and shared 62nd place. David scored 82, 82 and 87, Gavin 81 82 and 88.
Winner was Matt Ewald (Washburn) with a three-over-par total of 219, made up of scores of 74, 74 and 71. Three over par he might have been, but Matt still won by six strokes.
It was a reality check for the Post University team who have done well over the past year in mainly East of the country competitions.
This was a first trip to meet some of the big boys over at San Diego on the West Coast.
