NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
Loreto College, Cavan's twin stars Leona and Lisa Maguire successfully defended their Irish Schoolgirls' Senior Cup title at Edmondstown Golf Club today.
The 14-year-old pair won the event by a margin of 23 Stableford points from Dublin's Teresian School, in spite of having returned home late on Sunday evening from Scotland, following Leona’s win and Lisa’s third place at the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play championship at Troon.
In setting a new women' course record of level-par 72, Lisa had five birdies - at the second, fifth, seventh, 11th and 18th - while double bogeys at the 13th and 17th prevented the perfect round. Meanwhile sister Leona birdied the eighth, 12th and 17th on her way to a fine 73.
In the first staging of a Junior Cup section in the schools competition, to encourage competition among the underage players, Mount Mercy of Cork emerged victorious with Jean O’Driscoll returning a fine 28 gross points off 12 handicap.
Other players returning impressive net scores were:
April Timothy with 41 points, Shauna Busher Carley 40 points and Shannen Browne 38 points.
