ENGLISH WOMEN'S CLOSED CHAMPIONSHIP

Holly Clyburn beats title-holder Hannah

Barwood on a day of match-play upsets

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Girl international Holly Clyburn led a day of upsets when she defeated title-holder Hannah Barwood 3 and 1 in the English women’s amateur championship at Lindrick, Yorkshire today.
“It was a very exciting match and I’m very pleased,” said Holly. “Fingers crossed I can keep it going.”
The two 18-year-olds met in the second round – when the players had to contend with persistent rain - and their match was tight for the first 11 holes. But Holly took charge when she won the 12th, 13th and 14th to go three up.
Hannah pulled one back with a birdie on the long 16th but she left herself too much to do when she missed the green on the 17th – and her opponent found the putting surface in two.
In the first round Holly beat top seed Kym Larratt of Leicestershire.
Meanwhile, Kent’s Jerry Lawrence put on an impressive display to knock out international Rachel Connor of Manchester.
“I played well and this is a big win for me,” said the 19-year-old whose immediate challenge was to get her clothes and equipment dried in her Travelodge room in time for tomorrow’s quarter final.
Hertfordshire’s Charlie Douglass was in fine form as she beat the 2007 title-holder and Yorkshire champion, Naomi Edwards. She had three birdies on the outward nine to set up her 4 and 2 win and said: “I knew I would have to play well to beat Naomi, she’s a fantastic player.” Naomi was one of four Yorkshire players to reach the second round – but only one made it through to the quarter-finals. The county’s title hopes now rest with Emma Brown, who (as Emma Duggleby) has won this championship on two previous occasions, and who had good wins in both her matches.
Lindrick 15-year-old Sophie Godley came safely through her morning match before losing on the 17th to Hampshire’s Tracey Boyes. Despite her defeat she was still smiling broadly: “I’ve had a great time and really enjoyed myself,” was her verdict on her first championship appearance. Kim Crooks beat her first-round opponent on the 19th before losing to girl international Heidi Baek of Suffolk.
Earlier in the day international Rachel Jennings – the third seed – was beaten by Cheshire’s Charlotte Wild, who went on to reach the quarter finals.
