PAUL LAWRIE FOUNDATION MATCH-PLAY FINALS.
Lauren Ducan sprang the biggest upset of the day as she defeated the highly fancied Sam Leslie by 3&1. It was a very even match throughout with Sam having to play some great recovery shots as she struggled with her driver off the tee. Lauren just kept on finding the centre of the fairways and hitting the centre of the greens. Sam soon found herself four down with four to play. A late flurry from Sam was to no avail and Lauren held on to record an excellent win.
It was a similar story in the other semi final with Fiona Fullerton finding things tough off the tee. The rough was so unforgiving around the links, which meant that anything slightly off line would be punished severely. Louise Mc Gillivray took full advantage at the turn and soon built up a commanding lead. Fiona continued to fight hard but with Louise in fine form there was only going to be one winner.
The girls' final probably produced the best golf of the day with each of the girls producing sparkling golf. Honours were even early on but it was Louise who went into a two hole lead at the turn. Lauren kept splitting the fairways and she clawed her way back into the match to go all square with four holes to go. Louise edged in front and made a tremendous recovery out of the bunker at 16 to remain one up. Both girls were short with their tee shots at the par three 17 th but it was Louise who held her nerve to role in a tricky 6 footer to lift the title.
In the play off for the third and fourth places it was Sam Leslie who got her nose in front early on. Each player traded holes with some fine shot making but it was Sam who recorded a superb 4 & 3 win.
The girls certainly showed the boys how to play links golf today. Hitting the fairways and demonstrating a fine range of shots served up some thrilling matches. Congratulations to all the girls who demonstrated a very high standard of sportsmanship and skill.
Girls' results:
Winner - Louise Mc Gillivray (Banchory)
Runner-up - Lauren Duncan (Aboyne)
3rd place - Sam Leslie (Westhill)
4th place - Fiona Fullerton (Meldrum House)

PAUL LAWRIE FOUNDATION BOYS MATCH-PLAY FINALS

With perfect golf conditions overhead and the course in world class condition, the scene was set for some real fireworks in the two semi finals of the boys' matchplay. It was last year's winner, Ryan Bain, who was first to settle into his rythm finding the fairways with ease with his driver. Young Andrew Carrell (14)was always up against it as he continually found trouble off the tee. Andrew went three down early on and he found himself chasing the experienced Bain throughout the match. In the end Ryan ran out a comfortable winner with a fine display of Links golf.
In the other semi final Alexander Wiseman and Kevin Watson fought out a rather mixed match with some outstanding shot making and some very poor driving. In the end it was Kevin who held on to win 3&2.
In the final it was Ryan who once again split the fairways with Kevin really struggling off the tee. Early birdies saw Ryan go three up at the turn in tricky conditons. Watson fought back but could not maintain his late surge and Ryan won with plenty to spare by 7 & 5.
In the third and fourth play off it was Alex Wiseman who found his form in the afternoon. The pair exchanged early birdies but it was the lad from the "Broch" who ran out winner at the 17 th. I am sure that we will see more of "Young Andrew" in the future.
Congratulations to all the boys who played in the finals today. They demonstrated a very high level of sportsmanship and endeavour throughout the day. Well done to Ryan who retained the Matchplay Championships Trophy.
Boys' results -
