Dale Middleton steps into the gap left

by the departed Nicky Maddison

Newcastle's Nicky Maddison has vanished from the Hutchinson Community College, Kansas golf roster - either he's stayed at home in England or he's been "poached" by a bigger-league colleague team after the stellar autumn-winter-spring season he had in the States last year.
But into the breach for "Hutch" has stepped another Englishman, Dale Middleton from Coventry.
Dale was very much under Maddison's shadow in his freshman year but now he seems ready to be inspired by the fact that he is the team's No 1.
Middleton won the first of six Jayhawk Conference-designated tournaments of the season on Monday at Quail Ridge Golf Club.
But maybe some back-up is needed for Jay because Hutchinson - the Blue Dragons - were used to winning team titles while Maddison was winning the individual honours last season. In this first event of the 2009-2010 campaign, Hutchinson could finish only second behind Johnson County in the one-day, 36-hole tournament. The Cavaliers shot 588, while the Blue Dragons struggled in the afternoon round to finish at 598 the first event
Middleton had rounds of 67 and 73 for a four-under-par total of 140. He won by a shot from Trevor Johanson (Johnson City) who scored 69 and 72. The two finished clear of third-place Ben Moser (Kansas City), who had 73 and 74 for 147.
Johnson County (588) won the team title by 10 shots from Hutchisnon with Allen County (611) third of the nine competing teams.
